People for Ethical Adoption Reform (PEAR), formerly known as Parents for Ethical Adoption Reform, is a 501(c)(3) Pennsylvania nonprofit corporation. PEAR started as a grassroots group of adoptive and prospective adoptive parents who came together to discuss the lack of a unified, respected voice for adoptive families. Since its incorporation in 2008, PEAR has been a trusted source for information and advocacy in adoption reform.
In 2017, the Board of Directors recognized the need for PEAR to become more inclusive in its leadership and mission. Under the direction of new board members–including the first non-adoptive-parent adoptee to serve–PEAR refocused its efforts in 2019.
The organization is dedicated to producing quality post-placement resources and education materials, funding projects sorely needed in the community, and partnering with other human rights organizations to put the needs of adoptees, foster youth, and families of origin first. All of this in addition to PEAR‘s established advocacy for ethical practices in the care of adoptive and foster children, the preservation of families, and the long-term wellness of adult adoptees and former foster youth.
In short, PEAR believes that the existing system needs strong reforms because it does not represent the best interest of the people most impacted by the system: adoptees of all ages and their families.
Our worldwide membership includes prospective and adoptive parents, foster parents, adoptees, former foster youth, families of origin, and others interested in meaningful, ethical reform. We welcome you to become a member of PEAR.
